The Aquarian Performance 2 Coated is a fat sounding drumhead. An extra boost to the midrange and low-end gives you a deep sound without the overtones.
The Aquarian Performance 2 Coated is built with two plies of 7mil film, a coated top layer, and an outer control ring combined with sealed edges. The control ring and sealed edges give a highly focused sound, meaning the Performance 2 Coated produces a punchy warm attack, without the overtones. The coating adds to the warmth, helping to remove higher frequencies from the overall sound. Sustain is kept short thanks to the control ring and sealed edges, and the tone is focused on the fundamental note.
On toms, the Aquarian Performance 2 Coated is great for a warm and thick 70’s rock sound. This version is not as bright as the Clear Aquarian Performance 2, since the texture coating dulls the attack slightly. The sound of the Performance 2 Coated is well suited to medium and higher volume playing… The two 7mil plies help to increase the durability of this drumhead, allowing you to lay into it with some harder hitting when needed. It’s worth mentioning, however, that toms may not come through clearly at very high volumes, unless you have microphones on the drum kit. If you’re worried about this, take a look at the Clear Aquarian Performance 2, which has a more cutting attack. In the studio, the warm and controlled sound of the Performance 2 Coated means that ringing overtones won’t ruin your drum mix.
On snare drums, the Aquarian Performance 2 Coated gives a full and fairly short crack. Tuned low, it has a deep fat thud that is great for ballad rock-style playing. Tuned medium or high, it has good character and gives a little more sustain (especially when cranked up a lot). Like on toms, overtones are kept under control, making this a fairly easy-to-tune drumhead. The textured coating is very responsive to brushes, although the thicker design may not be sensitive enough for very light playing.
The Aquarian Performance 2 Coated is a great choice for a durable and focused drumhead that keeps overtones under control.
From Aquarian:
The Performance II is a two ply head manufactured with Aquarian's Vacuum Tuned Process which eliminates air bubbles and wrinkles between the two plies. The two 7mil plies are only sealed at the edges which tame unwanted overtones and puts a focus the low frequencies. The PFII is designed for loose tuning to deliver that low, fat, punchy tom-tom sound that were a big part of classic rock and roll records. Frequency control that adds focused power is built right into this head. The PFII is a great head to use to upgrade the sound of low priced kits.
